How to choose a yoga mat
With the increasing popularity of yoga classes both online and in local venues, the market for yoga mats and accessories has become a crowded one. More and more people are buying their own mats, whether to start a home practice or just to avoid using the communal mats at the local gym, and the choices can range from a £5 version from the local supermarket to over £100 for a high-tech, eco-friendly option such as the Manduka range.
So what should you look for when buying a yoga mat? The right mat for you is very much a personal choice, but you may want to consider the following:
Most yoga mats will be textured to minimise the tendency to slip in certain poses, and many will develop better grip through use. If you practice a strong yoga flow with a lot of movement and tend to sweat, you’ll want to look for a mat with decent grip. If, on the other hand, your practise is slower, this won’t be quite as vital. If possible, test the mat out in downward dog pose, to see how well you can hold your position. Alternatively, you may want to accessorise with a yoga towel or yoga socks to help you until the mat is broken in.
Most mats vary from 3mm to 6mm in thickness, although you’ll also find extra-thin foldable travel mats and extra-thick gym-style ones. Your first consideration will again depend on your practice – if you’re new to yoga, or have therapeutic needs and may be sitting or kneeling for long periods, more cushioning will make your time on the mat a lot more comfortable. You could go up to 15mm here, although it’s worth being aware that a thick mat can make it difficult to balance in some standing poses. If you’ll be carrying the mat to and from class, a thick mat can feel pretty bulky and heavy, so you’ll probably be best with something in the standard range. Finally, if you intend to take it with you when travelling you’ll want something very lightweight – travel mats are often only 1.5mm thick or less.
The majority of yoga mats are made from PVC, which is highly durable and tends to be cheaper. PVC mats are generally very comfortable, with a lot of give to them. However, if you’re looking for a more eco-friendly option, you can also find mats made from rubber, cotton, jute and bamboo. Jute and bamboo particularly often offer great grip, although they can be harder than PVC mats. It’s also worth checking if the mat is closed cell or open cell structure. Open cell mats prevent sweat pooling on the surface, but are much harder to clean. Closed cell keeps sweat away from the core of the mat, but may become more slippery.
While there is no standard size for yoga mats, most measure around 180cm x 65cm. If you’re particularly tall or broad-shouldered, you may want to look for larger options, and for a home gym set-up you may even consider round or square mats that give you plenty of room to move.
